On January 28, 2022, the breaking of the OCP oil pipeline once again impacted the Ecuadorian Amazon, contaminating the Napo and Coca rivers and affecting more than 27,000 people and countless animal life.

San José de Coca, one of the many communities that depend on these rivers from the Amazon Rainforest, have been struggling for years now. Before the water became toxic, they used the river for bathing, washing dishes, cooking, drinking water, fishing, etc. Now, when they need water they dig holes near the river, hoping that the sand has filtered the oil. With a toxic river has come disease, skin reaction hunger, and dependency on the government for their basic needs. OPC delivered 5 gallons of water per family, after six days from the latest spill. The community demands permanent solutions, such as building wells for each household, and delivering more food.

Once the river is contaminated with oil, there is no way back. The survival of the indigenous peoples who rely on these rivers depend on it.

El 28 de enero de 2022 la ruptura del oleoducto de la OCP impactó nuevamente la Amazonía ecuatoriana, contaminando los ríos Napo y Coca y afectando a más de 27.000 personas e innumerable vida animal.

San José de Coca, es una de las muchas comunidades que dependen de estos ríos de la selva amazónica, y quienes han luchado durante años. Antes de que el agua se volviera tóxica, usaban el río para bañarse, lavar los platos, cocinar, beber agua, pescar, etc. Ahora, cuando necesitan agua, cavan hoyos cerca del río, esperando que la arena haya filtrado el petróleo. Con un río tóxico ha venido la enfermedad, reacciones en la piel, hambre y la dependencia hacia el gobierno para mantener sus necesidades básicas. La OPC entregó 5 galones de agua por familia, luego de seis días del último derrame. La comunidad exige soluciones permanentes, como construir pozos para cada hogar y entregar más alimentos.

Una vez que el río se ha contaminado con petróleo, no hay vuelta atrás. La supervivencia de las comunidades indígenas dependen de estos ríos.
